From start to finish (part 2)

Here you can see the final stages of the making process, the day I took this from the bisque firing I was recovering from a cold and forgot to film, so we jump in during the glazing.

From the beginning I had in mind a dark patina for this form, I knew I wanted it to feel a bit mysterious and substantial.

Lately I’ve been thinking of bulbs and all the growth that goes on under the surface before we see the flowers bloom; this shape reminds me of a bulb and I think the making process was influenced by seeing all the daffodils and blossom this Spring.

The slips I painted on at the leatherhard stage have contributed to the different tones of black and subtle variations in texture, from gleaming satin in some areas to rougher and quite matte in others.

This piece is now finished, it was a departure for me into a heavier and more complicated form, the undulating curves were great fun to build and a challenge to paint. I’m enjoying having it around the studio - from its position it appears like a different sculpture from every angle but is reassuringly solid and grounding in it’s black and brown gleamingness.
