November studio

Keepsakes, gardens, play

Assembled works, collages, memories

Lately I rediscovered the word biophilia, and was struck by how much it resonated with me and my current art practice. When I’m talking about my work I hope what comes across is this connection and inspiration that being in touch with the natural world gives me.

Biophilia was the title Björk gave to her album released in 2011, essentially translated the word means our innate love of nature and living things; this thread runs through my work and is expressed in different ways.

My ceramic vessels are made to hold space and peace. The process of making them using coils is meditative and routine, the textures feel earthy and they have a reassuring weight and presence to them, a natural uneveness to the rims like a landscape with shifting horizons.

The assembled smaller works are playful and spontaneous, I let them be and they can totally change as they come together - if I have a loose plan to begin with they almost always deviate and become clearer as I go. Like my paintings I feel in these assembled works and in the mini garden sculptures I'm capturing a moment and expressing a memory of a place, starting to bring words and poems into them too.

I am planning an exhibition for next Summer and all of these ideas are bubbling away at the moment, the idea for the show is taking shape and the works seem to have their own momentum.
